The name has a genuine smuggling backstory: a "bothy" is Scots for a small hut or shelter, and the term became slang for the quarter casks illicit distillers used — small barrels for the purely practical reason that anything larger would capsize a rowboat. Smaller casks also mean more wood contact per liter, so flavor develops faster. Arran's version spends seven years in first-fill ex-bourbon casks before a further two years in 125-litre American oak quarter casks, bottled at natural cask strength — 56.2% ABV — non-chill filtered with no added color. Long available only as limited editions, it joined the core range in 2019. Expect warm gold color with vanilla, honey, Meyer lemon, toasted granola, cinnamon apple, coconut, and fresh oak shavings on the nose, opening into an intense, mouth-coating palate of pineapple, mango, banana, and papaya over malt, light caramel, and candied lemon peel, with ginger and cinnamon spice on a medium finish. Dramface called it a perfect go-to dram, and reviewers widely rate it an excellent entry-level cask strength malt. One honest note: the wood and alcohol run assertive, so give it time in the glass.
